DIY Projects Soar in 2020 as Holidays on Hold Due to Coronavirus

Our latest research shows that popular searches around ‘Home Improvement' & 'DIY’ almost doubled in January to July 2020 compared to the same time period in 2019.

At the same time, searches for holidays more than halved as the Coronavirus pandemic and subsequent quarantine rules made it hard for UK residents to travel abroad.


Amongst the findings there was also a number of interesting stats and comparisons which highlight the nations switch from getting away to getting on their overalls and giving their home a makeover:


  • Google searches for ‘pub shed’ increased the most from last year from the list of keywords that we analysed. Searches for that phrase quadrupled in volume as Brits chose to try and replicate their favourite local or perhaps tried to recreate a traditional holiday beach bar


  • Another big change was for ‘diy garden ideas’ which had almost 3x as many searches in Jan-Jul 2020 than in 2019 - perhaps due to the warm weather we’ve been enjoying too


  • Holiday search data does not exclude UK holiday searches, showing that the lockdown loosening in July wasn’t enough to boost holiday searches up to 2019 levels


  • Perhaps expectedly, ‘late’ or ‘last minute holiday’ Google searches nosedived as holidaymakers became ever more cautious during changes to lockdown restrictions
